Patience is a Virtue

There is a saying that has been dated back to the thirteenth century:

    “Patience is a virtue,
    Possess it if you can,
    Seldom found in woman,
    Never found in man”

I could also add rarely found in people starting out in marketing!

Why is patience so important when marketing your products and services?

I was on a great teleclass recently with Jay Conrad Levinson, the genius who coined the phrase “Guerrilla Marketing” back in the 80’s. On this recent call Jay shared 12 Personality Traits of Wealthy Guerrilla Marketers.

His #1 trait was patience.

Many would think there would be many more fancy things he could have thought up to place in the #1 spot but I also believe patience is the number one thing you need when growing your natural therapy business because patience and persistent consistent action brings results in every other area of life ......... so why wouldn't it bring success in marketing.

I encourage my people to start doing good things like blogging and setting up their website and regularly doing newsletters very early in the set up of their practice.    I get VERY frustrated when I go back to them a few months later and ask how they are going with those tasks only to hear them say that they gave up because they thought it a waste of time because no one was reading them.

One client was recently featured on a two hour radio program.  Was her website finished, did she have a free product to offer the listeners to encourage them to visit her site?  Did she have a blog so people could get a sense of her opinions and methods? No, so all she could do was hope they would write down her phone number.  People will remember a catchy website name but they have little hope of remembering a phone number so her wonderful piece of free publicity was limited to people with a pen and paper close by.

Another client was recently telling me how her partner had read the single blog post one of my old clients had put up and it changed his life in that instance.  Imagine if he had kept up the posting, he might by now have changed many more lives with his words.

You can see why I get frustrated when people lose patience because they end up losing patients.

These stories highlight the need for patience.  It is also based in the beautiful words of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Take the first step in faith.
You don't have to see the whole staircase,
just take the first step.
Marketing is all about the first step, not the staircase.

Most who are starting out want the big sweeping staircase from Gone with the Wind but the reality is that most don't have the budget to purchase one step, let alone the whole solution.  That is where Guerrilla Marketing hit the spot for so many people because it offered low cost ways to get your message out and gave many of us the faith to stay in the game because Jay's methods worked for so many.

The staircase appears after you have patiently worked your strategies for a long time and been patient enough to test and measure your results, tweaking as you go and eventually working out what it is you like doing and what it is your clients like receiving.  I’ll give you a hint – when those two things are the same, magic happens BUT it takes a little time, effort, energy, frustration and feeling like you are wasting your time to get to that point.

But if you don’t start you will always be struggling to get your message refined enough for people to want to listen to you.

Marketing is not a short term fix.  You can’t write one newsletter and expect miracles.  I’m not saying that won’t happen but in my experience it takes a little while for you to find your voice and find out what does resonate with your people and what does get them commenting and letting you know they are reading.

For a long time I also thought no one was reading until I started to speak to small groups and associations.  Then people would start coming up to me and talking about small things I had written in a newsletter that had helped them or had inspired an action that helped them move to the next level.

If I hadn’t been patient enough to keep writing even when I thought no one was listening, then for sure I would have given up and those people wouldn’t have had that small success or small step up that made a difference for them.

Jay shared on his call a strategy that is key to Guerrilla marketing and that is the concept of getting known.  He shared the importance of getting known by forming interactive dialogue not monologue with your audience.  The Internet creates so many ways you can interact with potential clients but most still aren’t making the most of it because they run out of patience and stop the activities that could result in many more clients being attracted to them.

During the call Jay also spoke of a survey that was done that calculated how many times it took for someone to experience your marketing message before they bought something.  The magical answer that this survey came up with was nine times.  I’ve heard some experts say it takes eleven touches before someone will move from apathy to “purchase readiness”

Each one of these “touches” or “experiences” of you or your products and services moves the potential client one step closer to purchasing from you.

But here’s the thing – there is another crippling piece of information that goes with being patient – you must also be consistent in getting your message out or people will forget you.  I have heard it said that if you don’t keep in touch with your people at least bi-monthly they will forget you.

It stands to reason then that if you only have one post on your blog, have sent a couple of newsletters and meant to get around to building a website and people can’t easily find you, then you are going to struggle.

If you are prepared to get into the game for the long haul, these are the things you will need to have on your to do list:
  • Send out your newsletter each month
  • Post to your blog at least once a week
  • Spend 15 minutes each day on social media sites
  • Create a free e-product to give away on your website that gives people a taste of what you do
  • Speak to people in your target market, it can be small groups to start with at least twice per month
  • Submitting articles to websites or media once a month
  • Make contact with an important person in your industry (at least one per week) and then make it easy for those people to send you clients
  • Arranging small workshops so people can understand how much you know about your preferred topic and get to know a little more about you.

Most certainly the most powerful way I know of connecting with people is in person so that puts speaking right up on top of the list of things you patiently need to be delivering to people.

If you take these type of actions, eventually people are going to notice you and then guess what?  Your business will start to get traction.

Natural therapists are some of the most patient people I have ever met.  They will sit for hours listening to people’s stories, taking case notes, being there for their clients at all hours of the day and night.

So why not move some of the traits of patience over to your marketing and start doing all the actions that are necessary to grow your business.

Utopia is finished................. sadly

Share/Bookmark

Well what a week in paradise!

Utopia was AWESOME last year but this year it was even AWESOMER (is that a word?) Everytime I think back to the very special moments shared over the weekend it brings me back into the fabulous heart space that was created over the weekend.

It was fabulous to meet up with last years presenters and to meet the new ones who were experiencing this special event for the first time. Words cannot adequately describe how wonderful it is to be with people of like mind for an extended period of time.

I have stayed on in Noosa for a little longer than anticipated because several of the presenters were involved with a fabulous event called Earth Magic and I decided I was so close and it would be rude not to attend - so I did and had an equally fabulous time experiencing the lovely Raeleen Burn speaking her truth and Jeremy Donovan wowing the crowd with his amazing knowledge and mind blowing didge playing oh and who knew he could play native american flute so adeptly. Raeleen and Jeremy released their CD at the event and celebrated all the joyous miracles that have occured for them this year as they step futher into their divine energy and soul purpose.

So as I soak up the blue skies and sunshine so foreign to this Victorian - you will be pleased to know I'm getting back to work and have interviewed my awesome hosts Sandy and Curly Harris of Relationship Mechanics about our experience of Utopia International Retreat

Utopia Interview Series 2009 featuring Jeremy Donovan

Share/Save/Bookmark
I had the great honour to interview Jeremy Donovan, a remarkable man with a remarkable message. He has such a passion for healing and his Australian Aboriginal Culture.

His story is quite extraordinary, going from an incarcerated teenager with little future to someone who is a highly respected healer and international performer, travelling the world, spreading his message with great love and integrity.

In this phone interview Jeremy shares stories of his life, his family and some of the history of the Didgeridoo, why many indigenous women choose not to play it and the importance of the story telling and dance. It was recorded a few days before Christmas and it was a very special gift that keeps on giving.

I have edited this interview for the Utopia International Retreat Interview Series. The audio is well worth the investment of time because Jeremy shared so much with me and a few of my natural therapists who were also on the call asking questions.

Jeremy will again close the Utopia International Retreat 2009 but will be joined this time by his dear friend and shaman colleague Dr Steven Farmer - you can hear my interview with Dr Ste here

ENJOY!!

Small Business Growth in a Turbulent Economy

I had the great honour this week to be invited by Gihan Perera of First Step Communications Pty Ltd to share my expertise and be part of a panel discussion on how small business is coping in this turbulent economy.

It was really interesting for me to hear how "big" small businesses are having similar issues as the "micro" small businesses I work with and more importantly that we all need to use similar tools to not just survive but also thrive in a recession. In fact I believe micro businesses have the best chance of lasting out the storm because they are so readily able to change to meet market demand.

I came away from the call reminded how everyone really just wants to have a successful business and still have time for family, friends and most importantly a happy and stress free life.

Therapists more than ever are required to help people manage stress and achieve a healthy balance and harmony in these far from stress free times.

Serious About Success Makes Its Debut in the Northern Hemisphere

Have you ever had a secret dream of world domination (in the nicest possible way of course!).

Well I have had that dream ever since I learnt that you could have an international business that consisted of a phone, a laptop and an internet connection.

That dream came a step closer this week as I completed the very first Serious About Success teleclass with my new Associate Mentor, Elaine Copeland (left), who lives in Sussex England. We were joined by the lovely Wendy who is an early adopter and the very first northern hemisphere participant. We thought that was worth celebrating, so you can listen in on the call and hear us talking about the program.

One day I will get used to the fact that it is first thing in the morning there and I need to stop saying its the evening (just because it is for me!)

Listen here

You can find out more about the Serious About Success Program here: http://www.abundantprivatepractices.com/success.html

We have Serious About Success programs starting downunder and upover so we will have a place for you now no matter where you live in the world!

It is amazing when your dreams start coming true. If I have been able to do it - anyone can because my learning curve has been massive.

To make the dream happen you just need to get the right knowledge and support and put the learning into action and be prepared to stay in the game and not whimp out and one day you wake up like I did today and realise one aspect of the dream is happening - GO THE DREAM!!

How to Start Using Writing as a Way to Get Your Business Known

Starting out as a writer is a daunting thought.

Where do you start?

How do you find ideas?

When do you publish?

Robert Rabbin of RealTime Speaking came in to the MOSH Pit as our special Guest GURU back in August 2008 to start to answer some of these questions. Robert is a favourite of MOSH Pit members and little wonder with a list of credentials like these:

Robert Rabbin has published 5 books and more than 200 articles, achieving more than 1,000 placements in magazines, journals, and newsletters throughout the English-speaking world. Some of his works have been translated into Portugese, Italian, Rumanian, Japanese, and Russian.

He was commissioned to write original essays for three anthologies, including the forthcoming Spirituality in the Workplace: A Multi-Dimensional Approach.

Robert has been a featured columnist for The New Leaders, a subscriber-based executive newsletter describing emerging trends and innovative practices in leadership and management, and for PlanetLightworker, HealthWorld Online, and Insight magazine.

He was also interviewed for The Awakening West, a collection of conversations with contemporary Western wisdom teachers.

His books have been endorsed by internationally renowned leaders in the fields of business, education, health, and personal growth, including Byron Katie, Ram Dass, Anita Roddick, Lynette Palmen, Drew Ginn, Bernie Siegel, M.D., Larry Dossey, M.D., Jerry Jampolsky, M.D., and Jeffrey Mishlove, Ph.D.

Robert is the author of RealTime Speaking and I was priviledged to have my story included in the book, along with several other RealTime Speakers.

Lee Carroll Interview with Margaret Gill of Abundant Private Practices (Sept 08)

In our journey we sometimes forget to look back and see how far we have come.

I have attached an audio to this post that sees me leap a significant (for me) milestone. I had the great honour to interview Lee Carroll who is the original channel of Kryon and author of the 12 Kryon books and is co-author of the book the Indigo Children.

You would be most impressed by that if you were a member of the Kryon community but everyone cannot fail to admire what an awesome job Lee has done in getting the Kryon message to the world. For anyone who knows me, it is no secret that I'm a BIG Kryon fan. It's certainly not for everyone, and I'm not saying you have to share my enthusiasm for channelled work but I guess what I'm saying is - have a listen to Lee the human first, then see if you want to move up to Kryon.

But for me it was a chance to look back to April 2000 when I was first introduced to the Kryon books by Trish Ellis, one of my most loved mentors. I read all the books voraciously; I was insatiable, reading all the books written to date then hanging out waiting for the next one to be released. Then, glory be, he started loading channels on his website for free that I could listen to at all hours of the day and night. I did all the exercises, I took on board the messages and gaily skipped over all the scientific stuff figuring there would be others who were taking care of that aspect!

As I read and listened, I dreamed of a time when I could go to a Kryon event live, but back then I would never have had the confidence to register and pay, let alone actually turn up (seriously I was that shy and full of “everyone else would be welcome but why would they want me there” - sad but the truth of who I was back then).

Then I read more and implemented more changes in my life and I listened deeply to what was being said and I went to courses that would help me overcome my fears, until one day in Loveland Colorado in 2006 for the very first Kryon Discovery Series – I had finally found myself at a live Kryon event - the one where Kryon told us that we could go out and bring peace to the planet, should we choose (but that's another blog post or fifty to explan what that has done to my life!)

What’s more I found myself speaking to Lee Carroll personally more than once during the event. Imagine that! Lee would laugh to hear me thinking this was a big deal because he is so down to earth and accessible during these events but I was such a scaredy cat in the early days that I would have run a mile rather than confront my fear of talking with strangers, let alone famous strangers!

Then this month I got to interview Lee Carroll for an hour on the phone. I can tell you I LOVED IT, in fact you will hear me in the unedited audio get so interested in what he was saying that I forgot I was asking the questions :-) Gosh I even made a technical mistake and still loved every moment.

So I’d love you to have a listen and maybe don’t get too wound up in the channelling aspect of things, but just think who you would like to interview and think about what it might take to make it a reality….because the cool thing is, if I could do it – so could you!

Who knows we might even see you at the Australian Kryon event in Melbourne 7-8 February 2009 – you can get more details here at Chris Hooper's website

You can find out more about Kryon here: www.kryon.com

But for now, just kick back and have a listen to the interview below - Lee is a highly knowable man and it was a fun and enlightening call.

Lee Carroll is the orginal channel of Kryon and Lee spoke with Margaret Gill about the upcoming Australian Kryon tour in February 2009, plus a few other things that are going on for the planet and humanity at this time.

Release of Robert Rabbin's New Book RealTime Speaking - Which I am Featured In!

I am VERY excited because I have been featured by prominent author Robert Rabbin in his latest book called "RealTime Speaking: YOU are the Message!", which was released this month.

You can listen here to an inteview I did with Robert earlier in the year where he spends nearly an hour discussing what RealTime Speaking is and how we can use it in our lives and businesses, particularly when we are promoting ourselves as the message.

Robert Rabbin Interview

MP3 File

My chapter is titled “Dark Night of the Soul” and tells the vivid story of a decision made on the freezing cold floor of my Victorian cottage in Hepburn Springs. The decision to get up off the floor has lead to an ability to speak publicly about my passion to work positively with others who lead from the heart. The story follows what needed to occur to take me from feeling like “a total loser” after my move from the city to finding the authenticity and power to deliver messages others wanted to hear.

In August 2008 I will deliver a key note speech at the Utopia International Retreat in Noosa called “Leading from the Heart” and this win was made possible by working with Robert Rabbin and learning what it took to express my true self.

Rabbin’s book comprises 26 essays by RealTime Speaking workshop participants — Australians from all walks of life, from leadership experts to magazine editors, from corporate managers to holistic healers — who tell their profound and poignant stories of personal growth and professional success by claiming their power to speak publicly with credibility and confidence, finding deeper meaning along the way, and transforming their lives with the power of authentic self-expression.

The book is drawing excellent reviews can be purchased from Roberts’s website at http://www.realtimespeaking.com/ .
